Brown targets Switzerland in global tax haven crackdown
A worldwide crackdown on tax havens, from Switzerland to the Cayman Islands, will be spearheaded by Gordon Brown as the world’s richest nations use the global economic downturn to close loopholes that are costing them hundreds of billions in lost revenues.
Clearly it has still not occurred to him that the British tax system is designed for avoidance. Perhaps not deliberately but that is the effect. People are mobile and companies can have multiple locations. But property is fixed. If taxation is tied to the holding of land titles, then it cannot be avoided or evaded. Brown does not need to go lecturing the Swiss – he should change his own tax system for one which won’t leak.
